I've lurked your youtube channel for awhile, and just discovered your blog. Thank you so much for introducing me to this book. And Loco, thank you so much for writing it. It was a truly pleasant read and I found myself getting depressed near the end when I knew the story was almost finished. Any time a book can influence my emotions I know it is well written. The aim was to write about my experience of reading his book, kind of in a similar tone to the way he wrote. I don't want to talk about the details of his book too much because they are stories that should be told by him. I felt the best way I could recommend it was to explain the impact it had on me.

Just a new, admittedly egocentric, approach to it.

I feel the same way about kindle reader for Android. Hate having the percentage at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks again for the IN-DEPTH review. I was already planning to get the book but after reading this post, I felt that I needed to go straight to amazon and get it. I even started reading almost immediately although I'm in the middle of another book.

It is so rare for someone to talk about the topics of racism and Japan in the same breath and not coming off as a hater or close-minded right off the bat. Still on chapter 1 but so far, so good.

You know, this was the reaction I had hoped for from readers of my work and feel very accomplished in having done so with a handful of readers thus far. Hopefully there will be more readers having similar experiences. Many of the feelings you describe above are the same ones I feel when I read my book, believe it or not. I still laugh and cry, and I wrote it...can you imagine what it must have been like trying to edit the chapters like ganbatte and Our eyes were watching god? Anyway, man, thanks for this! No matter what happens in the future as far as this project is concerned, having reached one reader was a reassurance enough that I've written something special. Down the road, perhaps someone will find reason to have as passionate a dislike for my work, and be as eloquent in their explanation of why as you have been, but it won't matter thanks to you and the others who have gotten to me first and filled me an optimism and confidence and positivity that won't be easily torn asunder no matter how scathing the review! THANK YOU for that!! It means everything. Once you've gone ahead and laid your soul bear for people to read and poke their fingers and minds at you'll know exactly what I mean and the degree of gratitude I;m feeling right now

I bought his book from B&N right before boarding a plane (Loco: I had to remove the nook DRM in order to install it on my favorite eBook reader, the Sony PRS-350*. I swear I won't distribute it to anyone else. Don't sue me!)

* The Japanese-market version supports ePUB formatted books, but only without DRM.

I too have met the man in person at a "tweet up" like event in some TGIF like atmosphere in Tokyo, and was surprised by different my impression of him in real life was from his online persona.

Anyway, when I read the chapters, I recognized a lot of the entries from his blog, so I read out of order: the first intro, the final conclusion, and a few entries I didn't recall reading online. I especially enjoyed his New Zealand and Australian roommates in the gaijin house tale.

Perhaps now I should read the rest of the entries again.

Thanks for the review. I'll definitely check it out. I haven't read a whole lot of Loco's blog, but I've read the post the book is named for and a few others.

On the subject of e-readers, it sounds like you might do better off getting yourself an actual Kindle. It shows more text at a time and has a progress bar of sorts at the bottom, showing you how far through the book you are both visually and as a percentile. Furthermore, you can adjust things like font size to suit your preferences.
